Did you know there’s a healthcare crisis in Fiji?
The World Health Organization (WHO) reported that Fiji’s rate of COVID-19 infection is one of the highest in the world. But the rising death toll is not only because of COVID-19.
Much of the problem lies in Aspen Medical failures. The company agreed to transform and improve Fiji’s healthcare but failed to live up to its promises.
In this article, we’re going to discuss what happened with Aspen Medical, and it affected the people of Fiji.
What is Aspen Medical PTY?
Aspen Medical is an Australian-owned global provider of healthcare solutions. The company claims to offer “innovative, tailored and guaranteed” solutions.
When the Fiji Government signed a deal with Aspen Medical in 2019, they did so expecting cutting-edge technology.
The company would also “be responsible for the clinical outcomes at the Lautoka and Ba hospitals.”
Aspen Medical took over two of Fiji’s largest hospitals and agreed to renovate them for state-of-the-art facilities.
But according to the people of Fiji, Aspen Medical has failed to live up to its guaranteed promises.
Aspen Medical Failures Explained
The most pressing issue is that the company agreed to have both hospitals operational and running by June 2021.
The worst-case scenario happened and by May of 2021, the Lautoka hospital was completely shut down due to an influx of COVID-19 cases.
Now as of late 2021, there is only one hospital up and running, with plans for the Lautoka Hospital to open in 2022 – maybe.
The catastrophic slowdown has resulted in a very limited number of COVID-19 vaccines. Fiji also lost millions besides not getting the healthcare treatment needed.
Aspen Medical agreed to renovate and upgrade the Ba Hospital so that it could move all services from the existing Ba Mission Hospital.
The healthcare company agreed to repair the Lautoka hospital. Aspen Medical also said it would add 305 hospital beds and offer help with service delivery.
Unfortunately, the company’s promises were not kept. The Ba Hospital is now overwhelmed with COVID-19 cases. There are also other ongoing medical crises that require the attention and technology promised.
Fiji has suffered, with many patients getting turned away because of a lack of facilities to treat them.
Medical Failures and Rising Death Rates
Fiji was hit very hard by COVID-19, as well as the Delta and Omicron variants. Unlike first-world countries, Fiji never had the funds or technology required to prepare for the pandemic on its own.
Fiji invested everything in Aspen Medical’s solutions, in good faith, but was greatly disappointed. Now, thousands of COVID-19 deaths are being reported from a very small geographic location.
Without the proper healthcare infrastructure in place residents no longer feel safe and fear for their lives.
This underreported health crisis is why we have decided to launch a website detailing what’s happening in Fiji.
Solutions to Aspen Medical’s Problem
Aspen Medical failures aside, what can you do to help Fiji’s healthcare crisis?
Many feel that the Fiji Government should put more pressure on Aspen Medical to fulfill the contract. This may be a lost cause, considering the timeline.
If Aspen Medical cannot fulfill its commitments, then the company should return the money to the Fiji Government. That way, Fiji can employ another healthcare system that can deliver results and save lives.
Finally, many agree there should be more national and international support to help the Fiji Government.
If the government can locally run, operate, and upgrade its medical centers, all decisions would be made for the people and by the people.
